Two Days in a Row of Japanese Giant Salamander Diving
We had beautiful sunny weather from the morning today.
Once again, we headed to the Kozagawa River to look for Japanese giant salamanders.
The water temperature was around 20°C, about the same as yesterday.
Because of the typhoon, we have been visiting the river more often over the past week, and little by little, we are getting a better idea of where the Japanese giant salamanders like to hide.
We got off to a good start today and spotted a tail. At least we found one!
They are designated as a Natural Monument in Japan, so just getting to see one is incredibly lucky.
We continued searching, and then…
We found a cute young Japanese giant salamander on the move!!!
It looks quite big in the photo, but it was a cute young individual, around 50 cm in size.
This little one was very curious and kept coming closer and closer to us as we watched.
It is a rare species that we must not touch, so it was a little nerve-racking when it came so close, but everyone was very happy♪
One of our guests had only ever seen a Japanese giant salamander in an aquarium before, so they were very excited to finally see one in the wild! (^^)
After making its way around as if it were greeting each of our guests, it stopped for a rest, giving us plenty of time to take a close look at its cute little hands. (^^)
Recently, many of the larger individuals have been quietly hiding deep among the rocks because it is their spawning season.
Sometimes they can be difficult to observe, but even seeing just part of one is lucky.
That wraps up our river diving for the moment.
Tomorrow, we are heading back to the ocean for some fun diving!!
The swell from the typhoon has decreased, but there is still some swell remaining.
Hopefully, the visibility will recover overnight.
Kushimoto offers a rich marine environment full of fish, while the Kozagawa River offers beautiful clear water and the chance to encounter rare wildlife.
