A Guest from Spain Joined Us Today
It was rainy in Kushimoto this morning, but the skies gradually cleared and it turned into a beautiful day.
The ocean, however, was a completely different story.
The swell suddenly became much stronger!
The direction of the swell changed from east to west, so we ended up feeling the effects of the typhoon after it had already passed.
This morning, we went Giant Salamander diving with a guest visiting us from Spain.
The river was completely unaffected by the typhoon. The water level was low, making for comfortable diving conditions♪
The water temperature was between 20°C and 21°C, but because it was warm on land, the cold wasn’t too bad.
Finding a Japanese Giant Salamander today was quite a challenge!
We’ve been visiting the river regularly over the past few days, but the Japanese Giant Salamander that had been in their usual spots were nowhere to be found….
While our guest enjoyed some time surrounded by the forest, we continued searching.
And finally, we found a Japanese Giant Salamander that was easy to observe!!
We had almost given up, so when we finally found it, I couldn’t help shouting, “There it is!” all by myself. Haha!
It was an adult, about 1 meter long.
It was hiding underneath a rock, so getting a good look at its entire body wasn’t easy.
But after watching it for a while, it eventually came closer to us, almost as if it were coming over to say hello to our guest♪
Our guest carefully watched the Japanese Giant Salamander through a gap between the rocks and was really happy to see it.
Later, our guest told us that they had almost given up too.
Finding it at the very last moment felt like hitting a game-winning grand slam, and we were so relieved!
We had originally planned to finish after the river dive in the morning.
However, our guest asked if we could also dive in the ocean since they had come all the way to Kushimoto, so we made a last-minute trip to the sea.
Visibility was 2–3 meters, and the swell movement was 2–3 meters, with some large swells coming through from time to time. The conditions were challenging.
It looks like the ocean conditions will remain poor through tomorrow (> <)
Even so, our guest was very happy and told us they had a great time observing all kinds of marine life!
In the strong swell, a Meiacanthus kamoharai father was bravely protecting his eggs.
It was the kind of scene that made us want to cheer him on!
According to our staff member Sayo, who checked the beach conditions this morning, visibility there was less than 2 meters.
Today’s fun dive was conducted after checking the guest’s diving experience.
However, for Discover Scuba Diving and snorkeling, which are activities for beginners, we decided to cancel tomorrow’s sessions with safety as our priority.
We sincerely apologize to all the guests who were planning to visit us….
We hope you’ll come back and try again when the ocean conditions are better.
We’ve decided to close the ocean tomorrow, so we’ll only be running Japanese Giant Salamander diving!!
Hopefully we’ll be able to find another Japanese Giant Salamander tomorrow!
We still have some availability for fun diving and Discover Scuba Diving during the second half of August.
