Calm Sea Conditions in Kushimoto, Even on a Rainy Day
We enjoyed another great day of fun diving in Kushimoto today!
Today’s boat diving in Kushimoto offered both wide-angle scenery and exciting macro photography opportunities.
Many people imagine rainy weather means poor diving conditions, but in Kushimoto, rainy days are often surprisingly calm. While the sky may be gray above, the ocean can still offer excellent diving conditions.
Today, we spent a relaxing day diving at sites inside the bay. Water temperatures were around 23°C, and visibility remained similar to yesterday, with comfortable underwater conditions throughout the day.
Since today marks the start of the spring tide, we are hoping that clearer offshore water will begin flowing into the area. If that happens, visibility could improve even further over the coming days.
After the recent typhoon, macro life is gradually returning.
One of the highlights was an young Giant frogfish. It has been staying in roughly the same location, making it relatively easy to find and observe.
We also continue to see another yellow Spotfin frogfish in the area. With two frogfish already found at the same dive site, there may be even more hiding nearby.
Nudibranchs are also making a comeback after the rough weather. We found Tambja amakusana, a very small but popular nudibranch known for its cute appearance. It was so tiny that it was difficult to spot at first glance. Looking closely at the photo later, we even noticed a sea spider in the background!
Another favorite today was Gobiodon quinquestrigatus, which becomes more active as the water warms. They were energetically swimming among the coral branches throughout the dive.
Warm and cooler water masses have been alternating recently, but overall visibility has been steadily improving. If a stronger branch of the Kuroshio Current arrives, Kushimoto could quickly return to its famous crystal-clear blue conditions.
Tonight, we plan to conduct a coral spawning survey at the branching coral colonies. The recent rain may affect conditions, but the only way to find out is to go and check!
Tomorrow we have a refresh diving course scheduled.
If it has been a while since your last dive, a refresh dive is a great way to rebuild confidence before the summer diving season. We are always happy to help divers get back into the water safely and comfortably.
