Another Fantastic Day of Diving in One of Japan’s Best Dive Destinations
We enjoyed another beautiful day of fun diving in Kushimoto!
The weather was perfect, and visibility at Shark Fin Rock during the first dive was outstanding. Water temperature reached 25°C (77°F) at the bottom, and a branch of the Kuroshio Current is now approaching Kushimoto, bringing warmer, clearer blue water to the area.
For divers visiting Japan, this is exactly the time of year when Kushimoto begins to show its tropical side.
Located at the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula, Kushimoto is widely known as one of Japan’s premier diving destinations. Thanks to the warm Kuroshio Current, the area supports an incredible variety of marine life, including tropical fish, colorful coral communities, and seasonal marine creatures that attract divers from across Japan and around the world.
Today’s guest was returning to diving after some time away from the sport, making it a perfect refresher dive. Calm seas, comfortable water temperatures, and excellent visibility created ideal conditions for getting back underwater.
One comment from our guest perfectly captured the experience:
“It feels like swimming inside an aquarium!”
Hearing feedback like that always makes us smile.
As water temperatures continue to rise, marine life is becoming increasingly active. Today we enjoyed watching Swallow batfish swimming gracefully through the clear blue water. These fish are commonly associated with tropical regions such as Okinawa, and their presence highlights the unique influence of the Kuroshio Current on Kushimoto’s underwater environment.
We also spent time observing Anemonefish's eggs. Many nests are now filled with beautiful silver eggs that are nearing hatching. During this season, even fish eggs become fascinating photography subjects, especially when illuminated by the soft natural light filtering through the water.
Juvenile fish are also becoming more abundant as summer approaches. We found a small frogfish that has been seen in the area for some time. Although it is still too small to identify confidently, it will be exciting to watch its growth over the coming weeks.
Another interesting observation today was the difference between a juvenile and adult Spotted moray eel.

The pattern changes significantly as the fish matures, making it a fascinating subject for underwater photographers and marine life enthusiasts.
With water temperatures rising earlier than usual this year, more divers are switching to wetsuits. Although Japan is currently in the rainy season, underwater conditions continue to improve. Visibility is increasing, marine life is becoming more active, and the ocean is steadily transitioning into its summer season.
One of the biggest advantages of visiting Kushimoto in June is the relaxed atmosphere. Weekday dives are often conducted in small groups, allowing for a more comfortable and personalized experience both above and below the water.
If you’re planning a trip to Japan and looking for warm water, healthy coral reefs, diverse marine life, and uncrowded diving, Kushimoto is an excellent choice.
We still have availability on weekdays during the second half of June. Whether you’re interested in fun diving, introductory diving, or a diving course, we’d love to show you the underwater world of Kushimoto.
See you underwater!
