Typhoon No. 30 Brings Swells to Kushimoto
We took a day off yesterday, but we're back in action today!
This morning, I went on a survey dive to check how Typhoon No. 30 is affecting the underwater conditions in Kushimoto.
Visibility was down to just 3–5 meters, and some of the swells were quite strong. Taking macro photos was definitely a challenge today!
With the swells expected to get bigger from tomorrow, we've decided to cancel diving operations on October 25 and 26.
Even the Green seaturtle was sheltering behind the rocks, away from the swells.
It almost looked as if it knew the sea was about to get rougher! (^^;)
Maybe wild animals can sense what's coming next! (^^;)
Seeing this was also one of the things that influenced our decision to close from Sunday.
How Is Kushimoto's Marine Life Coping with the Swells?
Although there were swells today, conditions were still manageable enough to observe some macro marine life.
So I went to check how the little creatures were doing!
First up was a Black-and-gold chromis, which I found again after quite a while.
When there are swells, damselfish tend to move around less, making them easier to photograph even with a compact camera.
So the swells aren't all bad! ♪
But there's no doubt that these conditions are challenging for marine life.
Some fish were desperately trying to withstand the swells.
One of them was a sea moth.
With sand swirling around, it was using its pectoral fins to hold onto a rock and resist the surge.
I really hope it makes it through the typhoon safely and that we'll see it again on our next dive! (><)
The nudibranchs were also quietly sheltering behind the rocks.
One of them was a Hypselodoris bullockii. Just below it, there was also a Bornella anguilla.
It looks like this spot might be a safe place for them! (^^)
Maybe it's a little nudibranch evacuation shelter! Haha!
Diving Cancellations and Conditions After the Typhoon
We'd finally been enjoying calm seas and improving visibility in Kushimoto... and now Typhoon No. 30 has arrived.
And once again, the bad weather is affecting the weekend. Such unfortunate timing!
I'm really sorry to everyone who was looking forward to diving with us this weekend.
Many of our guests travel a long way to visit Kushimoto, and we want them to enjoy diving in good sea conditions.
That's why we've contacted our guests about the situation. (TT)
Tomorrow morning, we'll check the sea conditions and go fun diving only if we determine that it's safe to do so.
Hopefully, we'll be able to enjoy a full day of diving!
At the moment, we expect diving in the Kushimoto area to resume on Wednesday or later. However, this may change depending on the sea conditions.
I really hope the typhoon passes without causing too much damage or reducing the visibility any further!
Once the typhoon has passed, we'll continue checking the conditions before resuming our diving operations.
If you're planning a fun diving trip to Kushimoto, please feel free to contact us!
We'll be happy to provide updates on sea conditions and diving availability.
See you next time!
