Scuba Diving in Kushimoto – From Beach Diving to Night Diving

A Full Day of Beach, Boat, and Night Diving

It was a rainy day here in Kushimoto, with the autumn rain front bringing showers on and off throughout the day.

Perhaps because of the rainwater, we also started to see more particles in the water（＾＾；）

The water temperature is still in the 26°C range, making it warmer underwater than on the surface.

It has been getting a little chilly on the boat, so if you get cold easily, we recommend bringing a light jacket to wear between dives.

Today, we welcomed a guest from Macau and enjoyed a full day of diving, from beach diving and boat diving to a night dive.

Exploring Kushimoto’s Table Corals

We started the day with a beach dive to see Kushimoto’s beautiful table corals.

Perhaps because of the high water temperatures this year, the corals seem to have become paler overall（〜〜；）

Hopefully, they can make it through and recover their healthy colors!!

After that, we explored a little farther than we usually do.

There, we found a cute little Cockatoo waspfish!! At first glance, it looks just like a dead leaf, but if you look closely, you can see its cute pectoral fins and eyes.

During the daytime, they often hide in the shadows of rocks and can be difficult to find. But on rainy days, less sunlight reaches underwater,

so sometimes we get encounters like this♪ Rainy days are not all bad!!

Fun Diving at the Limited-Season Dive Site “Ando-no-Hana”

After our morning beach dive, we headed out for two boat dives in the afternoon.

Our first boat dive was at Ando-no-Hana, which opened for the season today!!

It is available for diving until October 18, so if you would like to dive there, please come and visit us soon!!!

We also encountered some unusual marine life there.

First was a Pitted stonefish. It has a rather plain appearance as it sits motionless on the sand, but when photographed from the front, it has a surprisingly cute expression（＾＾）

Judging from its color, I think it is trying to blend in with the sea squirts.

It may look cute, but its dorsal fin has powerful venom, so we recommend taking photos from a little distance.

There is still a lot more to explore at Ando-no-Hana. Tomorrow, we plan to continue checking out different areas while enjoying some fun diving.

On our second boat dive, we found a juvenile Black-and-gold chromis for the first time in a while!!!

This year, we can really feel the benefits of the Kuroshio Current.

This individual is not very shy, so even with a compact camera, you can take your time getting close for photos.

The nudibranchs are still doing well, and today we also encountered a Chromodoris colemani.

With nudibranchs, southern species, and crustaceans all around, there is never enough time to see everything（＾＾；）

Finishing the Day with a Night Dive

For our guest’s fourth and final dive of the day, we headed out for a night dive!!

Being able to do four dives in one day could be a great option for divers who usually feel like they want to dive more, don’t you think??

Before entering the water, we got some information from photographer Gassy, whom we met there, and started searching for Frogfish.

At first, Striped sea catfish made it difficult to find them, but eventually we found two individuals!!

A large female and a smaller male were staying close together.

It is not the spawning season, but seeing them together made me wonder what would happen if they spawned.

They are masters of camouflage, blending perfectly into their surroundings. If you do not look carefully, you might not even realize they are fish.

Just before exiting the water, we found another two Cockatoo waspfish!!

It was definitely a day full of encounters with Cockatoo waspfish.

Come to think of it, I once drew a Cockatoo waspfish and turned the illustration into a sticker〜〜.

That brings back memories（＾＾）

Since we did so many dives today, we shared more photos than usual.

There is so much to see in the waters of Kushimoto, and diving here is always exciting.

The water temperature is still warm enough to dive comfortably in a wetsuit.

September 16 Update | Possible Effects of the Tropical Depression and Typhoon on Diving in Kushimoto

There is currently a tropical depression south of Japan, and it is forecast to develop into a typhoon.

News reports indicate that it may approach Japan during Silver Week. We understand that guests planning to visit us during this period may be concerned, so we would like to share our current outlook as of September 16.

(Please note that conditions may change depending on future forecasts.)

Based on the current forecast, there is a possibility of impacts from the afternoon of September 20 through September 21.

On September 20, we may be affected by swells from the typhoon, while on September 21, westerly winds associated with the passage of the typhoon may affect diving conditions.

The timing of these impacts may change depending on the future track and strength of the typhoon.

For guests scheduled to visit us during Silver Week, if poor sea conditions are expected, we will contact you no later than the evening before your scheduled diving day.

We will continue to monitor the typhoon’s track and assess the sea conditions accordingly.

If diving is canceled due to poor sea conditions, there will be no cancellation fee.
