Refresher Diving & Fun Diving in Kushimoto Today!
Despite the forecast, we had a sunny day here in Kushimoto!
The swell reaching us all the way from the Okinawa area also started to calm down a little.
Today, we had a refresher diving course in the morning, followed by boat fun diving in the afternoon.
Our morning guest was from Germany and is currently in Japan on a working holiday.
The purpose of the refresher dive was to prepare for diving at Mikomoto.
It reminded me of the time around the Osaka Expo, when we also had many international guests visiting us for the same reason. (^^)
We usually conduct our refresher dives from the beach. However, the visibility at the beach did not seem to have recovered yet today, so we headed to the river instead.
The river conditions were fantastic!
The water temperature was 26°C, and visibility was over 20 meters♪
It felt great just swimming through the clear water.
We saw Plecoglossus altivelis, Zacco platypus, and Macrobrachium nipponense, and successfully completed the refresher course.

In the afternoon, a Japanese guest joined us, and we headed out for boat fun diving as an international team.
It seems that yesterday was the peak of the swell, and it had already eased considerably by today.
The water temperature was still just below 29°C, with visibility around 10 meters.
Once the swell settles down completely, I have a feeling that the Kuroshio Current will quickly bring back clearer water!
Recently, with the Kuroshio Current approaching Kushimoto, we have been seeing more and more juvenile tropical species.
Today, we found a new young Regal angelfish!
It was just a little too far away for my compact camera…
Definitely a subject I would love to photograph with a DSLR!
Nearby, we also found a young Yellow boxfish!!
We hardly saw any young yellow boxfish last year, so hopefully we will see more of them this year.
According to our international guest, they are not easy to see around Koh Tao in Thailand.
The guest was so happy to see one that they gave a big fist pump underwater♪
We also introduced some subjects that were almost like an underwater eyesight test! lol
First up were the eggs of Gobiodon quinquestrigatus.
The fish itself is already small, so naturally, the eggs are tiny too.
You can really see how small the eggs are when you photograph them together with the parent.
The parent is only about 3–4 cm long.
During the second half of our final dive, we spent a little time looking for nudibranchs.
The one that got the best reaction from our guest was Colpodaspis thompsoni.
Its size was… probably around 1 mm.
Our guest had requested to see some nudibranchs again after a long time, so we introduced several very, very small ones.
After taking photos in microscope mode and showing them to the guest, their reaction seemed to say, “That’s what it looks like?!” (^^)
One of the great things about diving in Kushimoto is the incredible variety of marine life, from wide-angle subjects to extremely tiny macro life!!
Whether you love macro photography, swimming with schools of fish, or taking wide-angle photos, there is plenty to enjoy here.
Kushimoto’s best diving season continues through around November!!
