Fun Diving in Kushimoto: Enjoying Amazing Macro Diving Even with Typhoon Swell

Discover Kushimoto’s Incredible Macro Life on a Challenging Dive Day

Even though the rainy season has ended, today’s clear blue sky came with an unexpected visitor—typhoon swell.

The visibility dropped to around 5 meters, but Kushimoto still had plenty to offer beneath the surface. Instead of focusing on wide-angle scenery, we adjusted our dive plan and spent the day searching for the area’s incredible macro marine life.

Today we enjoyed two fun dives with guests from France and Tokyo. We were especially happy to welcome back our guest from France, who returned just two days after their previous dive.

It always means a lot to us when visitors decide to dive with us again during their trip to Japan.

Our original plan was to visit a goby site, but the surge made conditions difficult. Rather than forcing the dive, we changed our plan and explored a different area. This flexibility is one of the advantages of diving in Kushimoto, where every dive is planned according to the day’s sea conditions.

During the first dive, we found a tiny Long nose hawkfish, only about 10 cm long. It was a wonderful surprise and a reminder that new discoveries are always waiting beneath the surface.

For the second dive, we headed to a deeper area where the surge was much weaker.

Our long-time resident Pink Squat Lobster, also known as the Pink Squat Lobster, was still safely living on its favorite sponge despite experiencing two typhoons this season. It has become surprisingly comfortable around divers and sometimes even moves closer to the camera.

The same sponge was also home to the beautiful blue Aliaporcellana kikuchii, making this single spot an excellent place for macro photography. Because of the depth, Nitrox is recommended for photographers who want to spend more time enjoying this area.

We also encountered large fish such as Banded boarfish and LOng tooth grouper, although today’s visibility made them more difficult to observe. Fortunately, macro diving in Kushimoto is enjoyable even when conditions are less than perfect, allowing us to spend the day photographing fascinating small marine life.

Sea conditions can change from day to day, especially during typhoon season. At Aqua Vista Kushimoto, we carefully choose dive sites based on the daily conditions so our guests can enjoy safe and comfortable diving throughout their visit.

If you love underwater photography, nudibranchs, crustaceans, and other small marine creatures, Kushimoto is a destination you should definitely add to your Japan diving itinerary.

We look forward to welcoming you underwater in Kushimoto!
