Enjoying Everything from Wide-Angle Scenes to Macro Life
Today in Kushimoto, we had strong east winds and rainy weather, but we still enjoyed a great day of fun diving!
The conditions above the surface were rough, but once we entered the water, it was surprisingly calm with almost no surge. The water temperature was around 23°C, and our guests diving in wetsuits said the underwater temperature felt comfortable. It was a little chilly on the boat between dives, but everyone fully enjoyed both dives.
Today’s dives had everything from wide-angle scenery to tiny macro creatures. One of the highlights was the Bigfin Reef Squid. Rainy days are often very good for observing their spawning behavior, so bad weather is not always a bad thing for diving!
We were lucky enough to watch Bigfin Reef Squid on both dives, and our guests were very happy with the encounters.
On the second dive, one large male squid approached to within about 50 cm of us. Seeing such a large squid at close range is an amazing experience that can only be enjoyed during the spawning season at this time of year.
We also searched for the guest’s requested animal, the Green Sea Turtle. Recently, the encounter rate with sea turtles has been very high in Kushimoto, and today we successfully found one again!
Sea turtle season is just starting to become more active here. Many people do not realize that you can see sea turtles in Wakayama, so we hope more visitors can discover this amazing experience.
Of course, we also enjoyed some macro diving. Recently, we have been finding many tiny Tambja Nudibranchs. Today we even found an extremely small individual only about 1 mm in size!
If you enjoy nudibranchs and diving in a wetsuit, this is a great season to visit Kushimoto.
The ocean in Kushimoto is currently full of variety, from exciting wide-angle encounters to beautiful macro life. We also have many quieter days available heading into June, making this a wonderful time to visit.
