Kushimoto Tide Pool Photography – Shooting in an Ultra-Shallow World at Negative Low Tide

A Perfect Day for Tide Pool Photography in Kushimoto

Today brought another calm ocean and beautiful weather here in Kushimoto.

The air temperature felt almost like summer, and it was hot enough to wear short sleeves during the day.

With such amazing conditions, we headed out for a tide pool photography session.

The water inside the tide pools had become surprisingly warm from the strong sunlight — almost like a hot bath.

Even in these harsh conditions, many small creatures continue to thrive.

Today’s main subject was Barred-chin blenny.

As the water temperature rises, the activity of Barred-chin blenny inside the tide pools is increasing as well.

One of the most enjoyable parts of photographing Barred-chin blenny is the variety of shooting situations you can create.

The deepest spots were only around 20 cm, and some areas were as shallow as just 2 cm.

In many places, a snorkel is not even necessary. We enjoyed photographing while relaxing under the sunshine.

One of the most popular styles of Barred-chin blenny photography is capturing reflections on the water surface.

Today, we found several individuals living in perfect locations for reflection shots.

This particular one was living in an extremely shallow area with only about 2 cm of water depth.

Photographing in such shallow water can be challenging, but experimenting with different angles makes it incredibly fun.

Our tide pool photography tours are open even to non-divers, so anyone with a camera can join and enjoy this unique experience.

Changing the angle also changes the reflected facial expression, which makes each shot feel different and special.

The coming season is also a great time to observe behaviors such as courtship, so we are looking forward to visiting the tide pools more often and learning even more about this fascinating environment.

Tide pool tours are available around the spring tides when the tidal difference becomes especially large.

You can check the available tour dates in the announcement section below. If you are interested, please feel free to contact us anytime.

We were planning another tide pool tour tomorrow, but unfortunately rain is in the forecast.

There is a chance the tour may need to be canceled.

Hopefully, we can still make it happen.

See you tomorrow!
