Strong East Wind, Clear Water & Unique Fish Behavior

Fun Diving in Kushimoto with an International Team

It was another windy day in Kushimoto, with a strong east wind blowing throughout the day.

However, once we entered the water, conditions were completely different. Visibility was clear at around 12–15 meters, and the underwater environment was calm and comfortable. It was one of those days where you forget about the rough conditions on land as soon as you descend.

Today, we enjoyed fun diving in the Kushimoto area with guests from the UK and Poland. It was a great international team, and the ocean gave us a very enjoyable dive experience.

The water temperature has slightly dropped to around 20.8–21.8°C. With a dry suit, it’s still very comfortable. Some divers have even started using wetsuits, showing that the season is gradually changing.

Seasonal Highlights: Changing Marine Life

As the season progresses, we are seeing more changes underwater.

One of the highlights right now is the breeding behavior of Apogon aureus.
The males carry eggs in their mouths to protect them. Occasionally, they reposition the eggs, and that moment becomes a perfect photo opportunity.

If you enjoy underwater photography, this is definitely something to look for.

We are also noticing an increase in juvenile tropical fish this year. Due to relatively higher winter water temperatures, species that usually struggle during colder months seem to have survived and grown well.

For example:

  • Plectorhinchus lessonii has grown beyond 20 cm
  • Coris gaimard is starting to show adult coloration

These changes clearly reflect the warmer winter conditions we experienced this year. It will be interesting to see if some of these fish grow into full adults.

Nudibranch Season is Back

Another exciting update — nudibranchs are increasing again.

Compared to February and March, when sightings were quite limited, we are now entering a much better season. You don’t even need to search very hard; nudibranchs are starting to appear more frequently.

If you love macro diving or nudibranch photography, this is a great time to visit Kushimoto.

We are also happy to arrange dives focused on nudibranch hunting, so feel free to contact us if you’re interested.
