Fun Diving in Kushimoto – Big Fish Schools and Amazing Macro Life!

Another Fully Booked Day of Fun Diving in Kushimoto!

It felt like summer again in Kushimoto today, with beautiful sunny weather and warm temperatures!

On the second day of Japan's three-day holiday weekend, we split into two teams and enjoyed fun diving at the offshore and nearby dive sites(^^)

At the offshore sites, there was quite a bit of swell around the tops of the reefs, possibly due to the approaching typhoon.

Sometimes it was pretty challenging to take macro photos(^^;)

We've decided to dive at the nearby sites tomorrow instead.

Despite the swell, underwater visibility offshore was excellent at over 15 meters♪

And on our first dive of the morning, a huge school of Greenfish welcomed us!

When there's a moderate current, fish tend to gather into much tighter schools, making the underwater scenery even more impressive!

This year, the Kuroshio Current has moved closer to Kushimoto, bringing relatively strong currents to our offshore dive sites.

But there are some techniques that can help you swim more easily in a current!

I always explain these tips during our dive briefings.

If you're not confident diving in currents, why not come and practice with us?

Macro photography was a bit of a battle against the swell today, but we still managed to find and introduce several crustaceans.

And when it comes to offshore macro life in Kushimoto, Boxer crab is one of the highlights!!!

We found them on both dives today!

I wonder if there are more Boxer crab around than usual this year??

Meanwhile, at the nearby dive sites, several types of sea anemones are showing signs of bleaching...

Even Heterodactyla hemprichii, which we call the "Devil Fruit," has turned white.

When typhoons don't pass directly through the area, the seawater may not mix as much, which can sometimes put stress on marine life.

Scenes like this seem to reflect the ocean conditions we've experienced throughout the year.

I'm a little worried that we might not see them next year...

Entacmaea quadricolor are also showing some signs of bleaching.

They may look beautiful in photos, but knowing what this means for marine life gives me mixed feelings...

I really hope they can survive the current conditions and make it through the winter in good health.

Looking back, we ended up introducing quite a few crustaceans today!

One of them was Calvactaea tumida, a popular little crab with an adorable, perfectly rounded body.

They usually hide in places where they're difficult to spot, so finding them can sometimes be a challenge.

The swell from the typhoon approaching the Kanto region is likely to continue tomorrow, but the nearby dive sites should still be fine♪

Tomorrow, we'll split into an Advanced Open Water course team and a fun diving team!

Looking forward to another great day underwater(^^)
