A Wonderful Day Exploring Kushimoto’s Underwater World
Summer has definitely arrived in Kushimoto.
The sea was calm all day, and the water temperature has risen above 24°C, making wetsuit diving very comfortable.
Today, we welcomed a guest from South Korea for three fun dives.
It was their first time diving in Japan and also their first fun dive in quite a while. We spent the day exploring Kushimoto’s underwater world together, watching colorful fish and enjoying a relaxed diving experience.
One request for the day was simple:
“I’d love to see a sea turtle.”
We searched during the first two dives but didn’t have any luck. Then, on our final dive, we finally found one!
The turtle stayed calm and didn’t swim away, giving us plenty of time to enjoy the moment and take photos.
The first two dives were also perfect for macro diving.
It had been a while since I spent time carefully searching for nudibranchs, and it reminded me how much I enjoy looking for small marine life.
The nudibranch population is gradually recovering, which is great to see.
Today we even found Thecacera pacifica.
This species is easily affected by rough seas, so it’s always exciting to find one after a period of stable conditions.
The individual we found was only about 1 cm long. Hopefully we’ll continue seeing these tiny nudibranchs throughout the summer.
Later, thanks to Babu from Arc Diving Shop, we also found Osemizutama Umiushi (Thecacera sp. 7) slowly moving across the sandy bottom.
Its color blends almost perfectly with the seabed, making it surprisingly difficult to spot.
We also saw several young Korodai (Painted sweetlips) hiding around the rocks.
Their juvenile pattern looks completely different from the adults, making them one of my favorite fish to photograph every summer.
Summer diving in Kushimoto is becoming better every day.
Warm water, healthy coral reefs, sea turtles, colorful fish, and fascinating macro life all make this a wonderful destination for divers visiting Japan.
If you’re planning a trip to Japan and would like to experience scuba diving beyond the major tourist cities, we’d love to welcome you to Kushimoto.
We look forward to diving with you!
