Enjoying Kushimoto from Day to Night
Today was another perfect day in Kushimoto with beautiful weather and calm ocean conditions.
We headed out for both fun diving and a night diving session in excellent conditions, enjoying the ocean from morning until nighttime. Thanks to the Kuroshio Current, the water temperature has risen to the high 21°C range. I recently switched to a 6.5mm two-piece wetsuit, and it felt very comfortable underwater.
For today’s fun dives, our guest requested to practice using microscope mode for underwater photography, so we spent the dives focusing on macro and micro subjects.
When it comes to practicing microscope mode, nudibranchs are always perfect subjects!
We found Sagaminopteron psychedelicum on the very first dive, giving us a great start to the day. After that, we continued finding many different nudibranchs, making it an ideal day for macro photography practice.
On the second dive, Mr. Higeshita from Dive Supply showed us a tiny “Milli-Chu,” a very small Thecacera pacifica, and it became the perfect subject for microscope mode practice. It was my first milli-sized Thecacera pacifica of the season. I hope we’ll start seeing more of them soon!
Besides macro subjects, we also enjoyed wide-angle scenes including spawning Big-fin reef squid and schools of Chicken Grunt . It was a perfect balance of macro and wide-angle diving, and we fully enjoyed Kushimoto’s underwater world during our private guided dives.
After sunset, we headed out for a night dive.
Tonight, there were many Bob squid around, ranging from tiny 1mm individuals to larger ones over 1cm in size. Their unique shape is adorable, and they are one of my favorite creatures to see during night dives.

We also found Ablabys taenianotus, which often appears after dark.
It was our guest’s very first night dive, and they really enjoyed encountering creatures that are not commonly seen during the daytime, including squid, octopus, and crabs.
As the air temperature continues rising, this is becoming the perfect season for night diving in Kushimoto. We are accepting night diving reservations anytime, so please feel free to contact us if you are interested.
Coral spawning is also expected around the end of next month, which means the upcoming night diving season will become even more exciting with both regular night dives and coral spawning dives.
Tomorrow we are heading out for more fun dives with returning guests and new guests joining us. Looking forward to another great day in Kushimoto!
See you then!
