GW Starts with Snorkeling in Kushimoto & River Diving in Kozagawa

Snorkeling Course with Guests from Germany

Golden Week started today!
This year’s GW weather seems quite unpredictable, with the forecast changing constantly(^^;)

But with a dry suit, the weather doesn’t really matter♪

If you have the chance during GW, definitely give dry suits a try(^^)

This morning, we went snorkeling with guests visiting from Germany!!

They usually enjoy freediving as well, so their swimming skills were amazing!!

We showed them the unique scenery of Kushimoto, home to the world’s northernmost coral communities!!

It was great to see that the table corals and branching corals have been recovering nicely. We’re really looking forward to this year’s coral spawning season♪

One of the great things about snorkeling is how close you can get to the fish. Unlike scuba diving equipment, snorkeling doesn’t create bubbles underwater, so the fish tend to stay much calmer and let you approach them more easily!

The guest’s favorite fish today was the Spot-fin burrfihs.

Apparently, they really liked its unique colors and facial expression.

The weather was beautiful today, and I wore a wetsuit for the first time this year. Surprisingly, it wasn’t cold at all(^^)

In shallow areas, wetsuits may already be comfortable enough now.

In the afternoon, we headed to the river to search for Japanese Giant Salamander .

The river temperature has risen to 16°C, and the freshwater fish are becoming much more active!!

Due to recent rainfall, the river water level was slightly higher than usual today, so we searched only in calm areas.

Even so, we successfully found two Japanese Giant Salamanders individuals(^^)

The first one seemed to be watching fish swimming right in front of it, probably waiting for a chance to hunt.

Unfortunately, the battery of my compact camera died, so these are screenshots from an Insta360 video. Please forgive the lack of sharp focus汗

The second individual was staying in its usual spot.

It seems this place is its home.

It’s a little difficult to see, but this is an individual we can encounter quite consistently.

We can usually see its whole body, although it rarely comes completely out into the open(^^;)

Since it is a rare creature designated as a Special Natural Monument in Japan, we should simply be grateful whenever we can see its full body at all.

There was no ocean diving in Kushimoto today, but it was still a great day enjoying both the sea and the river.

Tomorrow, we are scheduled for diving in the ocean around Kushimoto.
Rain is forecast, but underwater conditions are unaffected by the weather anyway♪

We’ll continue enjoying diving to the fullest tomorrow as well!

We still have availability on May 4th!!

If you’re thinking, “Maybe I should go out and do something fun after all,” feel free to contact us anytime!

See you next time.
